(13 days to be exact :))
Procrastination - While in Paris i can honestly say i have perfected this.. As of right now i have 3 ten to fifteen page papers, a 5 page french paper on french pride, a 15 minute presentation, an art history exam and memorize a scene from the play Rhinoceros to perform. and yet i am here at school. blogging.
these past two weeks have been more than amazing outside of school! i went to london and finally saw some of my best friends from camp who i had not seen in years! of course i always love spending time with camp friends and reminiscing the good old days and what better way than do it in london while watching the royal wedding??? after a 5:30 am wake up call and coffee with bailey's by 6 we were on our way to hyde park to watch the big event, along with 200,000 other crazed brits and tourists.
Bobbin was my best friend. partially because he loved me the most :) but also because of his great sense of humor, enormous smile, screaming cheers at field hockey games, hysterical quotes ("for WHATTTT?") optimism, generosity, and simple joy he brought everywhere he went. i was blessed to have him in life and couldn't thank him enough for his last gift to me, the ability to come back to connecticut and spend time with friends and family. i will be forever grateful for Bobbin, everything he gave me and the gifts that I continue to receive in his memory.
Honestly, how could I complain, the US, Paris and Croatia all in one week? I seriously am living the life! Not knowing anything about Croatia, I, along with five new friends from Boston College, traveled to Cavtat, Croatia. (just a thirty minute drive outside of Dubrovnik) The minute we landed my roommate, Mia, and I knew we were in heaven. the taxi driver was so friendly, the hotel workers were all great and no one staying in the hotel was under the age of 65. heaven right??

So after the week in Croatia I spent an entire week in Paris without any class. to say the least it was spectacular. all of my friends had friends and family in town so my days consisted of sleeping in, running and then wandering the streets of Paris for hours on end. this city is literally amazing and even though there are so many museums to go into and restaurants to eat in, there is even more to see and do when you walk around. only 24 days left in paris and im already freaking out!! i have a ton of work coming up but for now i'm off to the ROYAL WEDDING! more pictures to come and i promise to update this sooner than my return to the US for the summer! ahh

xoxo magpie
Magpiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18124094749969897952noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1624746279194763544.post-37327629420085517142011-03-21T04:12:00.000-07:002011-03-21T04:12:09.882-07:00Half way over!Hello!!!

my entire program also went to the chateaus Chantilly and Ecouen. Chantilly is famous for their whipped cream but the castle itself was amazing! it had a moat the length of a football field surrounding it and was gorgeous! when i become a bagillionaire i will build a house just like this one :)

So after Germany we got on a train to Prague - my favorite of the three cities! Prague is like Paris minus all of the French people and the really good food! the city is so small and medieval and the people were so friendly. Although it was absolutely freezing we walked around the entire city, the castle town, old town, the jewish quarter and the new town. even though we didnt speak a word of the language everyone was so nice and we somehow managed to communicate. of course all of the sights were amazing, i didn't know anything about Prague before i got, but the best part was our hostel was across the street from a restaurant called bohemian bagel. yes they served american bagels!! i haven't had a real breakfast in 2 months so could not resist being american and eating there every morning. the night scene is prague is really cool too, with a club that is 5 stories with each floor being a different theme and tons of cool bars. one of the bars we went to was a competitive drinking bar where you had a tap at each table and it calculated how much each individual person at your table drank and then how much your table as a whole had drank and then compared you with the entire bar, but then you were also competing with other pubs around the city and around the czech republic. it was so much fun and my competitive nature kicked in so....to say the least it was a lot of fun. anndddd i even met another kid from st. louis one night while we were there! - funny story about prague i got there with a black long down north face coat. i went to the bar was talking to this random st. louis boy and his group from BC and went home. the next day while we were at the castle i realize my coat is brown, naturally i start yelling "THIS ISN'T MY COAT! WHO'S COAT IS THIS?" all around teh castle while my friends laugh hysterically at me realizing that one of the BC girls had the exact same coat in brown and we had swapped...everyone likes the brown better anyways but it was pretty embarrassing at the time!

This picture was at the opera house. We decided to be intellectual and sophisticated and go to the opera to see Figaro which was amazing, but we were in teh standing section and after the first act, which was an hour and a half, we left and walked around Vienna which was so much fun. Vienna was a lot like paris as well and our hostel was great again. We were all so exhausted by the time we got there that we didn't do much sight seeing but we walked around and definitely got a good feel for the city and hopefully will be going back again eventually!

So now i've been back to paris for almost 2 weeks...i've been really bad at blogging haha but this past couple weeks has been amazing! the weather has been so nice and i have been going to different gardens around the city everyday. i even started running again which has been so nice! School has been getting super intense, this week is midterms but naturally i find this blog and the people back at home muchhhhh more important! so back in paris...i have done a bunch of stuff including visiting the Musee Cluny, the Tuileries (its Paris Fashion Week for Ready to Wear), gone to the Gobelins Tapestry Manufactory where the kings tapestries are made and now they furnish all national buildings in France and around the world, the Madeleine Church, i even went to the American hospital! the hospital wasn't for me though...my friend rolled into the wall in her sleep and broke her nose hahahah

This past two weeks have been busy but some pretty crazy and entertaining things have happened that have lightened the mood. First of all while i was having lunch with a friend outside a sort of marching band called the Plaies Mobiles came through the square. this is not a school marching band but one of those street bands who starts at one point around teh city and dresses in crazy outfits. they walk around the entire city and people just join them and sing and dance around in the streets its hysterical and so much fun to watch! then the next day i went to hang out at the tuileries gardens outside of teh louvre with sarah and realized it was fashion week. literally hundreds of beautiful people surrounding us with the coolest clothes i've ever seen we got so jealous and stayed for awhile hoping to see someone famous haha! then as we were leaving i see this woman blowing up an enormous balloon. i figured it was just a street act where she has massive lungs or something but that wasn't the end of it! she continued to put her head inside and then the rest of her body! it was so bizarre and you couldn't help but stop and laugh out loud...only in France

I can't believe so much time has passed since my last post, the time is really flying! I am going on my first trip tomorrow for our February break with three of my friends to Berlin, Prague and Vienna and I have been so busy figuring all of our trip plans out I totally forgot about this... So the past two weeks..they have been amazing as has this whole trip! i dont even know where to start hmmm basically classes have really started and my teachers all have decided that their class is the most important. this means 2 hour classes are 2 and half, one hour classes are 2 - to put it simply i have been to the louvre for 8 hours in the past week for one class :) i mean how could i honestly complain about that but it seems to be getting a little excessive.
sites in the past 2 weeks
- for a class we went on a walking tour of monmartre which was gorgeous, and i always love climbing the stairs to Sacré Coeur. I attempted to brag and whip out my "Etudiant de la Sacré Coeur" passport but then everyone realized its on a business card and weren't quite as impressed...
We got there only to meet tons of other american students from all over the US but much to our dismay they aired french commercials! my friend sarah and i were thoroughly disappointed and after watching Christina Aguilera flub the national anthem, went to the only restaurant still open at 2 am and ordered fries.
Luckily for me, my classes end at 12 on fridays so I casually went to the gardens of the Rodin museum, nicely situated across the street from my house, and sat, attempting to tan and do work for 3 hours. it was absolutely heavenly and for about 3 minutes i had even convinced myself that i was french.
- Sunday it unfortunately was rainy and freezing again so what better thing to do than march around underground with the dead bodies in the catacombs. I never really realize how clausterphobic i am until i get into small areas like these. adds a couple thousand skulls, arms, and legs and you have me literally shaking in my boots. the ceilings were about 6 feet tall and your arms could nearly touch the side of either wall. while being super freaked out, it was a very cool experience. to think that someone literally spent hours and days taking bodies out of their burials and nearly rearranging them in an underground cave is pretty crazy. the quotes around the bones were very interesting, all with the common theme - death- but still somewhat inspiring.

Finally the end of this post and the most interesting thing i have learned so far in Paris - the word dingue. pronounced dangggg it means crazy and for some reason my roommate and i feel like it is the most fun word in the french language. i have decided that when i get back to america i am figuring out a way to add this to everyone's daily vocabulary - dang that girl is dingue! ...anyways try it out and let me know how it goes! i am off to berlin, prague and vienna so i will have plenty to add next week too! Happy almost spring!!!

Soooo school has begun... definitely a bit of a shock when you have 3 papers and a project in the first week and someone asks if we can use personal pronouns in our journals and I have to mentally remind myself to google what a personal pronoun is when i get back to the house! anyways i figured out what a personal pronoun was long before i got online but i am counting that as my welcome back to school brain fart for the semester. anyways... my classes all seem great even if i am going to have a ton of work this semester! Most of my classes are at museums every time or at least once a week which is amazing because i would be going to them either way on my own time.
okkkkk so its been awhile since my last post - what have i done?
Orientation is finally over! it is such a relief to not have to wake up at 7 for our 3 hour french classes every morning and then our 4 hour "fun walking tours" around the city. i can finally officially say i have a routine with life here. our final part of orientation was a trip to Louis 14th chateau, versailles. It was unbelievable! The amount of gold in that place is insane, everything from the glowing gate outside to the trimmings on the wall, the balconies, the tapestries, his bed, and pretty much anywhere on the walls. Fortunately for my program, we have two teachers who are professionally designated as Versaille and Versaille garden experts so I learned every little detail about the chateau that I wouldn't have if I went alone. The first day we went on the tour with the public through all of the "grand apartments" to the hall of mirrors and finally louis's bedroom. he literally has gold woven into his sheets! its a little outrageous if you ask me but then again...i wouldn't mind curling up under those covers! then we had dinner and i attempted to translate the French news on Egypt to my friends until we all passed out from museum exhaustion. Little did we know what was coming for us the next day. We were surprised to find that although the itinerary said we were starting at 1:15, our first private tour was at 9:25 am. Of course it was with a curator from the museum taking us to the private "petit apartments" so who could really complain? These apartments were also gorgeous and we even got to see some hidden rooms where the servants were kept and the opera which is not open to the public. finally it was lunch time when disaster struck! we were served celery puree with some sort of meet on top and for some reason there was a massive stomach for everyone involved the rest of the day. our teachers magically did not feel the same way and decided it would be a perfect time to tour the gardens for 3 hours and then roam around for the extra two hours before our bus got there to pick us up! It really is a gorgeous garden/s so i can't complain that much and all in all it was a really great trip!
Lucky for me the next day I had a surprise visitor. My dad and grandpa's friend happens to visit Paris often every year and he was in town. I had a delicious lunch with him at the famous Drugstore overlooking the Champs Elysée and the Arc de Triomphe and then we went to the Musée d'Orsay. It was so nice to be with someone from home and hear fun stories about my grandparents and dad and enjoy paris all at the same time. The Musée d'Orsay was really wonderful and I finally saw van gogh's famous self-portrait which was a surprisingly mind blowing experience. Its one of those things that Mrs. Groneck showed you pictures of every year over and over since I was 4 but when i saw the real thing in person i was almost speechless.
the best news so far that i've heard is that mom is coming to visit!!! we are just in the process of planning the trip now but i can't wait to see her and have part of the fam back in my life!!! i am also planning my trip over february break and it looks like I am going to Berlin, Prague and Vienna! I have an exciting few weeks ahead of me !! I will write alll about them soon!!
I am finally getting a routine down and figuring out how to not spend a bagillion dollars in a single day which Paris seems to think has been a perfectly normal thing to do :) After a week of sight seeing the weekend was a much needed repose, where I slept in each day until noon! I have never slept so late before but I am finally over my jet lag and am ready to take on Paris for another 5 months! Friday we officially signed up for classes which is such a relief. i am so excited to finally have my schedule and my classes are pretty outrageous!
1. french culture in french - this is the required core class that is just basic french culture and I think we do cool walking tours around different neighborhoods and other things like that
2. french 301 theater - Each week or so we read a different play in french and then have an excursion to a different small theater around paris to actually see the play! it sounds amazing and an experience i never would really have if i wasn't in the class. I am really excited to see the different areas we will be visiting and the teacher is supposedly really great !
3. exotic fare - basically french food and wine class !! So far we have already had a required wine and cheese tasting which was sooo just awful! i mean who wants to go to a fabulous winery, learn how to understand the different types of wine and cheese and french culture ..and all before the sun's gone down? the teacher is really hard but we only have a midterm paper a final paper and a final presentation so it sounds pretty amazing! o and for an extra .25 credits we get to go to restaurants and try the foods and wines and experience the different things we have been taught! - what a pain right??
4. Paris: A Museum City or a City of Museums - each week we have two classes, one in the classroom and one exploring a different museum around paris! there are only reading assignments throughout the semester and then a final project where we pick a specific museum and design a pamphlet explaining how we would personally change the museum in its layout and pieces and in our specific tastes
5. Paris: Art and Architecture - similar to the museums class but we go all around the city taking walking tours and just looking at the gorgeous architecture around the city

i never have been legitimately excited to start classes before but this semester i can't wait.
this weekend we also went as a group to a pretty cool bar called "bar trois." at first it seemed weird and sooo small but then they lead you downstairs and its a big cave with different rooms and a little dance floor. we all had a great time and it was great hanging out with all of the kids from trinity! then finally i went to bed and it was soo nice to be lazy on sunday. everyone had been so exhausted from the orientation week that i barely saw anyone. we had an assignment to see the luxembourg gardens. our teachers thought it would be fun to send us on a scavenger hunt around to get a better sense of the park... i don't think they realized its been 30 and raining everyday and the map at the kiosk had all of the different places they were telling us to go to. after about 20 minutes my three friends and i gave up and went to our respective beds to curl up and continue the lazy sunday. all and all it was fabulous and a perfect way to end an exhausting and amazing first week!

so one week is over and still nothing to complain about! i miss everyone from home!! but its been great!! more adventures to come... xox MagpieMagpiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18124094749969897952noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1624746279194763544.post-38000521025517069282011-01-19T10:36:00.000-08:002011-01-19T10:36:34.813-08:00say FROMAGEEEEEIts hasn't even been a week yet and I already feel like im well aquainted with the life of a parisian...the parisian's may think otherwise, but that's not really the point! So far the trip has been amazing! I mean its been more like a vacation where I wander around petite french streets eating crepes and attempting to get people to understand my french. Fortunately for me, we have three hours of french class every morning and i live with a French family so my french is getting better and better everyday! I will finally get down to details of my trip..i feel like i haven't actually explained anything in full detail yet!

chez lecat!
My family consists of an older couple, Dominique et Francois. They are soooo nice and live in such a beautiful home!! I have my own room with a big bed, desk and dresser and even my own bathroom. There are two other students here too, one living across the hall from BC and another on the 6th floor and they are both really nice. Unfortunately/fortunately I have been extremely busy wandering the streets of Paris and in class so I have not gotten to know them very well yet! We have had family dinners which are really nice though and I am getting to know more about everyone. My homestay dad is super interesting, working as a judge at the Palais Royale and I think he is really important because he works beaucoup and answers teh phone at dinner. dominique is always apologizing because she knows that is "so unamerican but its for his work." Francois and Dominique also used to live in the Congo while Francois helped write their constitution, so all in all they are pretty awesome.

les activités
we have already done so much the 5 days since i've gotten to paris its amazing! yesterday alone we took a walking tour, guided by the two heads of the trinity-in-paris program, around St. Germaine des pres which is the area our school is in. it is an amazing area where so many philosophers artists and writers began and even has the oldest restaurant in paris there! we found plenty of places to eat and shop and it was amazing. after that we decided to be true parisians and buy a baguette and some pate to bring back to one of my friends apartments! the apartments Trinity managed to provide us with are actually amazing! then we went back to school and had a bus tour of paris, it was so beautiful and made me realize that i have sooo much too see! he brought us all over paris, to the arc de triomphe, notre dame, champs elysee, the eiffel tower and everything else famous in paris! i felt like such a tourist but i dont even care!
today had french class from 9-12, which will be happening everyday until next friday! it is so painful sometimes between our teacher making fun of our accents and how american we are, and then how horrible some people in my class actually are, but the different activities with our trinity program make up for it. for example, today we had a wine and cheese tasting. it was so much fun just in that environment, but then tasting all of the delicious cheeses and learning how to swish and smell and breath the wine the right way so that you can get all the best flavors out of it. dad, you would be so impressed with my wine tasting skills, i can actually understand why you are so into wine!
we went to the eiffel tower the other day which i think so far was the highlight of my trip! i am shocked at how enormous it actually is..i dont know if that is me being ignorant but the eiffel tower is HUGEE it is so beautiful at night especially when all of the lights are flashing too! but anyways... we went up and it was so pretty! unfortunately we could only go to the second tier because it was too windy but it didnt even matter! and did you know that the eiffel tower has an ice skating rink on it, that is the next thing we are going to do!

mes amis
i have made lots of friends, dont worry mom! and it is pretty crazy but nearly everyone on this trip gets along really well even though almost none of us were friends before we got here! i am also so fortunate to have been in france before because i know people here now! my friend who i exchanged with in high school, capucine, is actually in paris for the month and i get to see her! it is going to be so fun being reunited with her i can't wait! ....ok this is excessively long and sounding unintelligent so i am going to be finished soon but i thought i would end with some of the bizarre rules that i am given by the lecats.
After my first day, I literally can't get enough of it! the shops, cafes, bars, people everything has been amazing and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. I visited le champs elysees, got attacked by friendship bracelet makers at the sacre coeur, walked across the seine, saw the artists at monmartre and stared/gawked at the flashing lights on the eiffel tower from my friends' apartment. My homestay family seems amazing, with insane house guests like today's ambassador and two head nuns of the vatican, I see a bright future ahead with the Lecats. This is only the beginning!!! i will write more and with more detail later! here is the first picture taken in paris!
Paris! Paris! So many new people to meet, adventures to have and places to explore I actually can not wait any longer! This is my first post, seeing as I haven't even left St. Louis yet, so obviously I don't have much too say about my future city. Even though I'm still in the US of A I figured I would start writing now, hoping that it will motivate me to write everything down about my trip. I want to remember every great moment, and hopefully anyone who reads this will enjoy hearing some of it too! There will be much more to come, but now I better just try and take on the feat of packing.... wish me luck!Magpiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18124094749969897952noreply@blogger.com0
